One of the largest dam in Maharashtra is the Koyna Dam. The dam is situated in Koyna Nagar. It is placed in the western ghats and between Chiplun and Karad.
The dam is the main source of water to western Maharashtra and also provides cheap hydroelectric power.The project of Koyna comprises of four dams of which the Koyna dam has the biggest catchment area.
This dam is responsible for the backwaters of Shivsagar Lake which is huge with a length of around 50 km!
